Home Run Derby field: Bryce Harper headlines slugging showcase

A round can be shorter than four minutes if the second player in the head-to-head matchup eclipses the total of his opponent. Houston's Alex Bregman, who is the lone AL player in the field, wasn't expected to be part of the home-run hitting showcase, as he ranks 13th on the junior circuit in home runs. Instead of splitting the participants into four from the American League and National League, the NL is represented by seven of the eight players involved in the event.

The field selected for this year's Home Run Derby has the potential to make up one of the most competitive events in Midwest League history. The setup of the competition will be players battling against their own division for the first two rounds. Each round will have a three-minute time limit for each athlete. The player with the most home runs in each head-to-head matchup will advance to the next round. SOUTH BEND, IN - The Midwest League has officially announced the participants that will compete in the 2019 Home Run Derby at Four Winds Field on June 17.

In 2006, the selection of four players from each league resumed. In 2011, the format was revised so that team captains selected the individual sides. Here are the eight players taking part in the Home Run Derby. The seeds were determined by total number of home runs hit heading into the contest. This was the third consecutive year that the Rocket Mortgage by Quicken Loans College Home Run Derby was decided on the final pitch. Ready edged Clemson’s Logan Davidson in dramatic fashion in the final round, 21 points to 20.

Not enough for him to succeed with the top one percent of baseball’s top one percent, at least. If you read me often, you’ll know that this might be the first time I’ve mentioned launch angle in an article. That sort of technical dissection is beyond me, and, frankly, it scares me. I came of age in an era when we had to yell at GMs to pay attention to on-base percentage, and it was much easier.

He also hit 38 home runs in 135 games at Double-A in 2016, so he definitely has some pop. But he hasn't homered since June 29, so he's going to have to figure something out if he hopes to compete. Hitting in front of his home crowd in D.C., Harper is the most recognizable name and face in this competition.

• The 21-year-old is the only rookie with multiple home runs further than 440 feet this season. He’s posted a hard-hit rate (95+ mph) of just over 50%, ranking in the 94th percentile of MLB, and an average exit velocity of 91.9 mph, in the 91st percentile. On July 11, 1988, the day before the Major League Baseball All-Star Game from Cincinnati, TBS televised the annual All-Star Gala from the Cincinnati Zoo. Larry King hosted the broadcast with Craig Sager and Pete Van Wieren handling interviews. The broadcast's big draw would have been the Home Run Derby, which TBS intended on taping during the afternoon, and later airing it in prime time during the Gala coverage.

Participants Announced for 2019 Midwest League Home Run Derby

Harper is the biggest name of the bunch, and has experience and home-field advantage on his side, so he’ll be a popular pick. However, Aguilar has hit the most home runs of that group thus far. The field for the 2018 T-Mobile Home Run Derby has been set. Baez, Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, Brewers first baseman Jesus Aguilar, and Astros third baseman Alex Bregman were eliminated in the first round of the 2018 Home Run Derby. Harper beat Dodgers breakout star Max Muncy in the second round to get to the finals. Schwarber knocked off Phillies slugger Rhys Hoskins to advance.

They'll each be part of the eight-player tournament field. From 2005 to 2013, a gold ball has been used once a player reaches nine outs (in 2014 when the T-Mobile Ball came into play, six; since 2015, during the final minute). If a batter hit a home run using the golden ball, Century 21 Real Estate and Major League Baseball would donate $21,000 (a reference to the "21" in "Century 21") per home run to charity . In both 2005 and 2006, $294,000 was raised for the charities, equaling fourteen golden ball home runs per year. State Farm continued this in 2007 as they designated $17,000 per home run (one dollar for each of State Farm's agencies), to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. In the 2007 event, fifteen golden balls were hit for a donation of $255,000, and ten ($170,000) were hit in the 2008 event.

If a player hits two home runs longer than 440 feet in that round, he gets an extra 30 seconds of bonus time at the end of the round. Players are allowed one 45-second timeout in the first round and semifinals, and in the finals each player gets two time outs, one 45 seconds long and the other 30 seconds. • Even with a slow start, Seager is well on his way to setting a career-high in home runs this season. Seager already has 22 home runs -- the most he’s had in a single season coming into the year was 26 during his rookie season in 2016. The Rangers shortstop has been red-hot in July, with seven home runs -- tied for second-most in baseball -- including a streak of five consecutive games with a homer.

Pujols could join fellow 600 home run club members Barry Bonds , Ken Griffey Jr. (1994, '98-99) and Sammy Sosa as a Home Run Derby champion. The players who will represent the Eastern Division include South Bend's Jonathan Sierra, Bowling Green's Chris Betts, Great Lakes' Niko Hulsizer, and Lansing's Jake Brodt. Four players from each Division to battle for $1,000 grand prize.

MLB

Players advancing can depend on so many different factors that it’s tough to feel confident about any one player. The 2015 National League MVP sat out of the 2017 derby in Miami in preparation for the upcoming contest in his home park. Harper hit 29 home runs last season and is on pace to hit this season.

He's also the odds-on favorite, with his 11-to-4 odds to win the Derby. Harper is the only one of the eight participants to have partaken in a Home Run Derby before, as he was the runner-up to Yoenis Cespedes in 2013 at Citi Field in New York. The 28-year-old earned his spot on the NL All-Star Team by winning the Final Vote. The Venezuelan emerged last year, his first real full season in the big leagues, by showing some power. But he's taken it to a new level this year, with his National League-leading 24 homers thus far in 2018. The first baseman also leads the NL in slugging percentage and OPS.

Records

Recorded only five of ten outs before hitting winning home run. Recorded only seven of ten outs before hitting winning home run. Harper will be participating in the event for a second time, while each of the other seven participants will be participating in their first. Joining him for Monday's showcase is a group of sluggers who have hit 150 home runs. Seven of the eight participants hail from teams in the National League, with Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman the lone American League representative. Bryce Harper will represent the home town Washington Nationals in Washington, D.C., but he may not be the clear favorite to win it all.
